The musical opens Wednesday of next week. Rehearsals this week have been an endurance test; I feel like I’m failing. And next week will only bring more of the same. I heard a rumor that company members will be dismissed early tonight, though, with only the major characters remaining. Perhaps I will be able to get to bed some time before midnight, which would be a welcome change. Trying to keep awake throughout the workday without any caffeinated soda is a tough order, and I’ve almost caved in once or twice. I happily report, however, I remain successful in that endeavor.
The extended text explains a little about the show. I didn’t write it, but why reinvent the wheel? Christian directs the music and leads the band; I am a nameless villager who sings the really high notes. I also play the cat. Come to the show - you’ll see what I mean.
Bishop DuBourg’s Summer Alumni Theatre presents its fifth summer production, The Baker’s Wife, book by Joseph Stein and music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz.
The musical runs Wednesday through Saturday, June 18, 19, 20, and 21 at 7:30 pm in the comfortable air-conditioned Guild Theatre at Bishop DuBourg High School. This musical’s book is by the author of the classic Fiddler on the Roof, and the music & lyrics are by the premier composer and lyricist of Wicked!, Pippin, Godspell, and Disney’s Enchanted.
The show is based upon a French film and tells the story of a middle aged baker and his young wife who seek a new life away from the city in a small rural town in Provence. Their relationship of different ages and different expectations of life and love form the focus of a very warm and sentimental story enhanced with the humor of the town’s argumentative yet caring citizens. The music and lyrics are wonderfully varied, lush, and exhilarating, and the score has become a real favorite among lovers of American musical theatre. The show has had several New York bound productions, the latest starring Patti LuPone, and a lavish London production directed by Trevor Nunn, director of many of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s musicals.
The cast of 27 consists of alumni of Bishop DuBourg and its Guild Players. This cast is filled with rich voices and talented actors and actresses. It is a show that will leave you smiling and warm, and likely humming a few of the melodies. So spend an evening filled with memorable characters, an emotional story, and music that will stir your soul--Stephen Schwarz’s The Baker’s Wife. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for high school students, and $8 for children 12 and under. All seats are reserved and can be obtained by calling the S.A.T. ticket hotline at 314-783-4477. Your tickets will be held for you at the door until 7:20 p.m., unless other arrangements are made.

Joan, it sounds splendid. If I lived in St. Louis I’d be there. I hope to read reports of the post production.
Have fun!
I was in bed by 10:30 last night! Hopefully this evening will run smoothly - 3 rehearsals before the big opening night!!
SOMEONE’s husband told me that it was going to be the LAST weekend of June (mind you, I heard this back in February when we went to the Body Worlds thing)......so by the time I heard it was going to be over next weekend, it was too late! I won’t be home from the DC area until the 22nd. Late. Break a leg, though!
It’s times like this I wish I lived closer to the heartland. I feel like I’ve experienced it through your writing about it here. But I know nothing’s like being in a packed house with a rapt audience.
You will, no doubt, rock said house.
Hope everything went well last night...sorry I won’t be able to make it we have rehearsal for my show and I have to work on Saturday :-( Break a leg for the remainder though.
