Comix Curriculum Vitae, ‘93-’96

: Comics :

beanbag central logo

Over the past couple months, a lot of people have been asking me about the status of my beanbag central comic. I haven't touched it since July last year. And right there, on the front page, I claim it's "a biweekly (or so) webcomic."

I guess I've taken a pretty liberal reading on the "or so" part of it, huh?

My excuse is that it simply takes too long. I can't commit to a bi-weekly comic as long as I'm teaching, especially when it's cartooning for free.

Also, just today, I noticed someone was searching for some of the old comics I used to have posted on this site. (I see you in the activity log there, all of you, doing your bizarre searches for comics and people's names and bands and musical theatre and sex positions. Weirdos.)

The comics haven't actually gone anywhere since I retooled this site as a blog; they've just been hiding away in a little corner of the beanbagcentral.com server. So, for those of you who're that desperate to dig through all my cartooning work, here's my Comix Curriculum Vitae, from 1993-1996. Two warnings:

  1. There is some really ugly second- and third-generation HTML up ahead, from back in the day when Netscape 2.0 was king.
  2. Some of these comics are just bad. It's downright painful for me to read a few of these. But they're all included here, for good or ill.

CultuRe Trap (1993-1995): I actually drew this comic strip for The Maneater between '93 and '98, with a couple sabbaticals in-between. What's here on the web is only what I was able to scan and archive for the first three years. Some of them are terrible scans, but in some cases, they're all I have left. (I do have many of the originals, somewhere. Anybody wanna dig through the old files in my basement?)

Flower and Death (1994): Okay, this one's just embarrassing. It's like reading some forlorn high schooler's LiveJournal. I can't believe I actually published this.

squeeze. (1995): Wordless comic. It's all in the facial expressions. Inked by another Maneater cartoonist, John Kline.

How the Columns Came To Be (1995): A satirical myth about the University of Missouri-Columbia landmark. Scatalogical humor at its finest.

promise (1995): A love letter. I'm surprised how about how well this one has held up over the years.

Progressive (1996): This one's not really a comic, but it's still pretty funny, if only because you get to see a pretty concrete record of alcohol's degenerative qualities. I was younger then.

hole boy (1996): My magnum opus.

  1. yeah! I LOVE Progressive! I mean, Hole Boy is amazing in topic and design and CultuRe Trap is cool if only because of the memories from college and reference to television that only cool people know. But seriously, Progressive rules! Alcoholic blow jobs-- what’s better?

  2. Christian- I am so glad you brought these to the forefront again. I’m gonna ask though… is MY comic still hidden somewhere on the site? I would love to have a copy on screen.

  6. it’s good to see them again.  good to remeber who you (we all) once were, where we’ve come from.
i hadnt’ looked at hole boy in years.  there’s even more to it than i remember...or i was able to see, from here, what i could not then.
and i agree with leaving the bio be.

also, i dig that it’s your little face in my address bar on safari.

  7. JMelch, I didn’t know that you were a stalker here too! Do you know I went looking for an old photo last night and found a picture of you, Kristen and Tanya last night… You all looked horrible. Ah, blackmail material!

  8. Hey, I didn’t find any info on sex positions in this blog…
I think mentioning it was entrapment!

  9. a picture of Jenn, Kristen, and ME?  anything from my freshman year is EVIL.  it won’t look like me, i promise, and if ever used as blackmail i will deny that it is actually my image.
