lower and Death
is a four-page comic that was
published in the September 1994
edition of STIR Magazine,
the literary magazine at the
University of
Missouri-Columbia.
It is NOT in any way
associated with the characters
or storyline of my Maneater
comic strip, CultuRe Trap. One of the
reasons why I did this comic
was to demonstrate that my range in
comics was not limited to CultuRe Trap.
I think that I succeeded marginally in proving that.
Other goals I
had with this comic were to
extensively use gesture and
posture with the hands, face, and
neck to display emotion; to
use lettering that was honest
and direct (as opposed to the
glitzy style I often use); to
use the simplest, most honest line
possible in the art; to let the words be
the central point of the work,
without over-dominating; and, last but
definitely not least, to provide for myself an
outlet for prolonged denial and depression.
The title isn't as symbolic
as you think it is.
I'd like to know what you're
speculating, though. Mail
me what you think it means and
and I'll tell you how far off you are.
